Junior year, I had the amazing opportunity to shadow ArcelorMittal's leading environmental engineer, Marion Gammon. During my shadow, I got to get a good glimpse at what systems are used to monitor environmental factors surrounding the coke battery. The systems were all digital and loaded into Mrs. Gammon's computer, where she then recorded the data, used many mathematical formulas, and was able to know how much environmental impact the battery had in a matter of minutes. Marion has her degree in chemical engineering, just as many other engineers at the facility did. I was given a contractor safety presentation and test before I was allowed to tour the facility. Luckily, I managed to pass and was able to get up close and personal with the battery, getting to watch the trolley move around it, and peeking in at the smoldering hot bricks used as insulation. While there, I was able to meet many other engineers and safety crew, and learned a lot in regards to how coke is used in the steel production industry. It was so inspiring, and was an experience I will never forget! ...
